Dental records and eZdrave: what to keep

Keep treatment plans, X-rays and receipts together, check Bulgaria’s eZdrave records and prepare the information a new dentist will need.

Which documents to keep after a visit

At a later appointment, it can be difficult to remember when a procedure took place or which tooth was treated. Keep your available documents together and arrange them by date. Separate proposed treatment from records of completed work so that the two are not confused.

Keep examination notes and treatment plans, X-rays and other test results, records of completed treatment, care instructions and receipts. You do not need to create a clinical record yourself. Keep what you receive and ask the practice how to request missing copies.

What the Bulgarian dental module shows

On 6 October 2026, NHIS announced the dental module in Bulgaria's electronic health record. It shows examinations, dental status and treatments entered by dentists, through eZdrave and my.his.bg.

NHIS is Bulgaria’s National Health Information System, which holds electronic health records. NHIF is the National Health Insurance Fund, which pays for covered care. Three different records can describe the same visit:

Document or systemPurposeWhat it does not establish automatically
Health-insurance booklet and supplementRecording and checking NHIF dental proceduresA complete history of all medical and private dental care
NHIS electronic record and eZdraveViewing entered clinical informationThat NHIF paid for a recorded procedure
NHIF reports of reported and paid careChecking care reported under public insuranceEvery private treatment

For funding records, use NHIF electronic services. For issue, extra pages and validity, use the health-insurance booklet guide. eZdrave's dental module does not remove the booklet requirement for NHIF care.

The module's availability does not mean that your entire past history has been transferred into it. Check individual entries and keep documents from earlier visits. The tooth chart records information from examinations; it is not a separate diagnosis of your current condition.

How to open your electronic record

NHIS describes web-portal access with a qualified electronic signature. eZdrave can be activated by the official methods, including in-person help for people without that signature. For assistance at the designated Regional Health Inspectorate (RZI), regional health-insurance fund (RZOK) or Information Services offices, bring ID and your phone with the app installed. Check the current activation instructions and office hours before travelling.

After activation, open the dental module and check the date, provider and procedure for a particular visit. If the module is missing, check that the app is up to date.

If you help someone else, establish the authorised way to access records in their circumstances. Parental access and access to another adult's record are different arrangements. Do not share login codes or an electronic signature to bypass settings. Use the official portal's support contacts if you need help.

How to give a doctor or dentist access

NHIS shows how to give a doctor or dentist access to your health record in eZdrave and approve or decline access requests. In Bulgarian.

What to take to a new dentist

Ask the new practice which documents it needs and in what format. If you have had X-rays or other scans, request the available files and any written reports. A photograph of the screen may not give the new dentist all the information in those files. The treating professional decides whether earlier imaging answers the current question or further information is needed.

Add a short note of important procedure dates and outstanding questions. Bring information about medicines, allergies and changes in your general health to discuss at the examination. Keep personal notes distinguishable from official clinical documents.

Your dental treatment plan: what to ask

If something is missing or does not match

Note the date, practice and exact discrepancy: procedure, tooth or payment. For clinical-content errors, contact the practice that created the record and ask for an investigation and explanation of any correction needed. Contact NHIS for technical access problems.

For a procedure reported to NHIF that you believe did not occur, or a payment dispute, use the fund's official contacts. Supply relevant documents through the channel it specifies. A missing entry does not alone prove that treatment never happened; an NHIS entry does not alone prove that NHIF paid for it.

Use a channel agreed with the recipient to share documents and check the address. Do not post a health record on social media to seek a general opinion. Our contact form handles enquiries to the foundation; it is not a place to send clinical records.
